Once ACP has received your graduation confirmation (around mid-May) from the U of A, your status will change to provisional pharmacist . You will receive a new practice permit mailed to the address on file. The SPT program consists of a minimum of 1000 hours, but additional hours can be expected in order to demonstrate entry-to-practice competencies. Some PAs see and assess patients, take patient histories, perform physical exams, educate patients, perform procedures, assist in surgery and more.
Demand is increasing and pharmacy technicians can earn up to $37/hour. Placement is an integral component of the Pharmacy Technician program. In order to provide high quality placements for each student, travel outside the Peterborough area will be required. Placements are scheduled as two, four- week blocks to facilitate accommodation and or travel arrangements. Hospital placement start /end dates may vary based on the needs of the hospital and dates may extend outside of the semester.

Prior to going on practicum, students must complete a test for Tuberculosis showing that they are clear of the disease, and must also have up to date immunizations as required by practicum sites. Your commitment and dedication are required. On average, students spend 20 hours/week attending virtual classes online, plus an additional hours/week doing coursework and completing homework. The exam must be completed prior to beginning the online SPT program. You may complete the jurisprudence learning module as a student, but please keep in mind that exam results are only valid for 2 years from the date of completion. Our Pharmacy Technician Diploma program prepares graduates for the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada's national certification exam. Only graduates of programs accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs are eligible to proceed through the registration process to become pharmacy technicians. Graduates of non-accredited programs become pharmacy assistants. Pharmacy assistants do not carry a license or their own insurance and do not have the same responsibilities or income potential.
Students should obtain their criminal reference three months prior to placement; checks conducted earlier may not be considered current. As some jurisdictions require longer lead-time for processing, please check with the program coordinator to ensure you allow for sufficient turn-around time. It is the student's responsibility to provide the completed document prior to placement start.

If you completed the jurisprudence learning module after January 17, 2021, the new version of the jurisprudence learning module includes the two mandatory courses. You will be issued a practice permit that is valid for two years from the date of registration.
Learners will apply institutional dispensing policies and procedures while integrating skills and knowledge, including order interpretation, drug distribution systems, pharmacy calculations, documentation, and independent double checks. Extensive use of role plays will enhance development of effective communication skills. Learners will examine federal and provincial legislation, drug schedules and practice standards related to the practice of pharmacy in Alberta. Learners will study the code of ethics and apply principles to pharmacy-specific situations. Registered Pharmacy Technicians have an expanded scope of practice that includes responsibilities such as performing final checks on prescriptions and receiving verbal orders from prescribers. Other tasks include compounding mixtures, dispensing medications, or preparing sterile products such as eye drop compounds or intravenous mixtures.
